Underdogs opens solo exhibition by Ana Aragão: cities, monopolies and the right to imagination
Underdogs presents a new exhibition by Ana Aragão, the self-described “paper architect”: Monopolis reflects on the state of housing and cities in our current era. Rather than a political proposition, Aragão reflects on the notion of personal space: in her own words,“a house serves not only as the domain of the body, but also as the domain of the imagination”. It brings forward a series of imaginary cities, rooted in the popular board game. In order to buy a house, a player must get ahead; to win, they must lead others to bankruptcy.
Ana Aragão graduated as an architect at the Faculty of Architecture of the Porto University (FAUP, 2009). She attended the PhD of the Department of Architecture of the University of Coimbra (2011-2014). Currently, Ana is dedicated exclusively to drawing, exploring the theme of urban imaginaries and paper architecture. Her hand-drawn interpretations, bringing together the realm of architecture and that of fine details, is represented in collections all around the world.

Underdogs inaugura nova exposição individual de Ana Aragão sobre a cidade, o monopólio e o direito a imaginar
A Underdogs recebe a nova exposição da“arquiteta de papel”Ana Aragão: uma reflexão sobre o estado da cidade e da habitação em 2024. Não se pretende içar uma bandeira política, mas sim pensar o espaço pessoal: nas palavras de Aragão,“a casa não é só o habitáculo do corpo, mas também o da imaginação.” Trata-se de uma série de cidades imaginárias, que encontram a sua base conceptual no funcionamento do jogo de tabuleiro. Para comprar uma casa, é preciso avançar várias posições no tabuleiro; para ganhar, é imperativo levar os outros à falência.
Ana Aragão licenciou-se como arquiteta pela Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto (FAUP, 2009). Bolseira da FCT, frequentou o Doutoramento do Departamento de Arquitectura da Universidade de Coimbra (2011-2014). Atualmente, dedica-se exclusivamente ao desenho, explorando a temática dos imaginários urbanos e da arquitetura de papel. Tem obras na coleção do Centro Cultural de Belém, Museu do Oriente Macau e Portugal, SNBA (Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes) e está representada em coleções em todo o mundo.
