Camões: epic, lyrical, universal.
A philatelic journey through 500 years of history.
As part of the celebrations to mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of Luís Vaz de Camões and the 450th anniversary of the publication of The Lusiads, the Museum of Communications presents the exhibition “Destination Camões: epic, lyrical, universal. A philatelic journey through 500 years of history”.
This exhibition celebrates the work of the poet Luís Vaz de Camões through a display of stamps, original drawings and other philatelic artefacts under the care of the Portuguese Communications Foundation (FPC). Organised in the form of a spiral, it presents episodes from the life of Camões, the places he stayed, the various representations of his face and his work.
After the publication of The Lusiads in 1572, and as a result of the period of economic and social decline suffered by Portugal after the loss of independence in 1578, Camões became a figure symbolising national pride and the moral crusade to reinstate the country’s independence.
The philatelic journey begins in 1924 with the celebration of the 4th centenary of his birth. This is followed by 100 years of Portuguese stamps including issues commemorating various anniversaries related to his life and work.
His innovative poetry combines the literary tradition with his life experiences, reflecting his disappointments, dreams and triumphs.
Each collection of stamps reveals a piece of history that lives on in time and is conveyed to future generations.
The issuing of the stamp “Camões – 500th Anniversary” in 2024 is the latest contribution to developing this narrative. It can now be seen in this exhibition.
Free admission.
